Burning Man 2002 Image Gallery - Image 18

Many of the artworks at Burning Man involved motion in one way or the other. Often a picture can only give you a short snapshot of how a thing looks like, but you cannot really get the idea until you see the thing in motion.
The "swimmers" as we called them (I don't know whether that is the official name, though), are one of these artworks. At night, the two stroboscopes were sending out short light flashes while the disc with the bodycasts of the swimmers was rotating. Like a little "thumb cinema", this gives you the illusion of the swimmers actually swimming in the Playa. Very cool! But I guess you really have to see that thing in action to appreciate it. The picture just gives you an idea of how the whole thing worked...
