The Black Rock Desert is a very windy place. It is surrounded by mountains but in the great plain there is nothing that could deflect the wind. And so the desert winds and Dust Devils are blowing full speed over the Playa and through the city.
The wind usually takes a hard toll on the structures and everything must be securely anchored in the ground so that it does not fly away (but still, every year some tents are carried away by the wind). The positive side is that the breeze makes the daytime temperatures easier to bear.
